Starwood Aspen Real Estate (2026)
Aspen's first gated community
Starwood Aspen gated community real estate. Aspen's first gated enclave above McLain Flats — multi-acre estates, 24-hour security, private trails and tennis.
The Lifestyle
Starwood was founded in 1962, when developer Edgar Stern bought the former Trentaz cattle-and-potato ranch above McLain Flats and carved it into estate parcels, making it, by most accounts, Aspen's first gated community. It sits on a high shelf northwest of town, in the hills above McLain Flats and southeast of Woody Creek, where multi-acre lots open onto meadows and long views of the Elk Mountains. John Denver built his home here in the early 1970s and wrote "Starwood in Aspen" about the place. Today the Starwood Homeowners' Association runs a level of privacy and service unusual even for Aspen: 24-hour gated security, equestrian pastures, private tennis, cross-country and hiking trails, snow-plowing, even a community post office. In the MLS, Starwood is filed under the McLain Flats area, which is where most buyers begin their search. It suits people who want genuine seclusion and ranch-scale land while staying a short drive from the core, and the trades here run accordingly, with whole estates changing hands well into eight figures.
