Smuggler sits at the base of Smuggler Mountain and the historic Smuggler Mine, at the mouth of the Hunter Creek Valley and less than a mile from downtown Aspen. A productive silver district in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it has become one of the most established residential neighborhoods in town, taking in pockets such as Hunter Creek, Williams Ranch, Park Circle, and Smuggler Park. Many of its homes carry some of the most direct views of Aspen Mountain in the valley. The Smuggler Mountain Road trail climbs to an observation deck and links into the Hunter Creek trail network, so morning hikes and rides start at the door. Free RFTA buses and the Oklahoma Flats path make the walk or roll into the core easy. It tends to attract buyers who want to live close to town, on real streets among full-time neighbors, at a more grounded price than the West End or Red Mountain.
